Youth Cultivation Organization (YCO)

The Youth cultivation organization strives for a alternative and empowering solution for a juvenile who has been in the criminal justice system. It seeks to promote People, Planet and Profit. Promoting people because it aims to rehabilitate and foster new and better choices in a youngsters life. Our project will aim on planting more trees and producing vegetation, by doing this we are combating climate change which evidently promotes a greener environment and planet. The agriculture sector is known to be one of the biggest markets besides tourism in our country. YCO intent is to also reach out to the different agriculture industries and promote members through recommendations who have been apart of this organization to then start working in this sector and receive income.

Describe la necesidad o problema que deseas abordar
As students of St. Johns Junior college We are taught that we should be ‘Men and Women for Others.’ Youth Cultivation Organization(YCO) intends to use this principle in the implementation and development of our NGO. The problem that we are striving to address is youth delinquency with our country because of low tertiary level rates, high unemployment rates and high crime rates that exist. Based on the opportunity structure theory, we know that if they are not legitimate opportunities for our youths then they will resort to illegitimate means in order to survive. We see the great need for more opportunities within our country so as to keep our youths occupied meanwhile learning a skill to enhance their life, a skill that they will be able to utilize in the future for the sustainability of themselves and their families. This is where the YCO will come in to provide an opportunity for those who have the willingness to learn and want to apply their skills but do not have the means to do so. This way our youths will not be looking for anyone to give them a job but instead becoming producers in which they are able to sustain themselves and families.
¿Cuál es el principal producto o servicio que ofrecerás?
The service we intend to offer is education through agriculture. We will have helpers who are knowledgeable about the agricultural process who will teach our youths how to plant various crops to produce for themselves and others and eventually they can make a livelihood using the skills they have learnt if they intend to.
Describe brevemente la comunidad o población que se beneficiará de tu solución y de cómo planeas involucrarlos en el proyecto
The youths between ages 16 and 20 who join our cultivation campaign will benefit from our NGO. This organization will incorporate youths from the different detention centers and unfortunate youths. These youths will be given an opportunity to become self employed and develop jobs for others. We plan to engage these youths by taking them to the area in Burrel Boom and teach them the necessary cultivation skills. Next they will start to produce various crops for sale.
¿Tiene tu propuesta un modelo de negocio (es decir, una estrategia para generar ingresos)? Por favor describe
Our proposal aims to not only rehabilitate but to produce vegetation. The youths that will be a part of this organization will be able to harvest their crops, having an amount for themselves and the other portion to be profited and use to create income for this organization. Therefore a portion of what is being produced like onions, tomatoes, sweet peppers and habaneros will be on the market. Developing trusted partnerships with different businesses within Belize who will support and buy our freshly and safely grown crops will create the source of revenue needed.

An inspiring and brilliant idea which I strongly support. I believe this new and creative idea will help our youths think more positive and have a clearer understanding on the importance of life through agriculture. Planting and nurturing what you have created will only merit the feeling of accomplishment. Furthermore, it will help boost and provide additional growth to the agricultural sector.

The youths of Belize are being victimized by gang violence and the low opportunity rates for education and job are making them resort to crime. This is the type of idea that needs to be implemented and supported.
